Dead Puppet Society

Digital Workshops

DPS Digital Workshops have been designed to provide meaningful arts experiences for students and educators. In this unique program, participants are guided through a series of exercises using common household/classroom materials to gain skills in both design and performance that are fundamental to visual theatre practice.

DPS Digital Workshops are accessed through a series of short videos available online, making them available for presentation both in the classroom or at home. Additionally, the Society’s facilitators are available for real time support, offering the chance for instant feedback and guided reflection.

We have two workshops available from Term Two 2020, which can be run individually or packaged together to provide a broader set of activities. Each workshop will take participants approximately 60-90minutes to complete in full and can be run as a one-off engagement or used as a starting point for a deeper work program. This format allows for highly flexible delivery, either in a single lesson or spread across a longer period. Both workshops are accompanied with a workplan to assist delivery.

PUPPET MANIPULATION  |  Cost: $450 + GST*  | Time: 60-90 minutes

This workshop demystifies the incredibly versatile art form of puppetry and arms participants with the basic skills to create characters and devise visual stories. In a series of exercises focussing on the fundamental manipulation skills participants will gain a grounding in DPS’ iconic puppetry work through:

·      The crafting and use of paper and object-based puppets.

·      An introduction to puppet manipulation skills.

·      The opportunity to devise small scale visual theatre performances.

·      A focus on movement and shape to create visual symbol & meaning.

PUPPET CONSTRUCTION  |  Cost: $450 + GST*  | Time: 60-90 minutes

Using the DPS Prototyping Method, participants will learn the basics behind designing their own puppet character, and using readily available materials to exquisite effect, before working together to explore the principles of puppet manipulation to bring their character to life through a series of visual theatre devising exercises. Using text or image as stimulus students will:

·      Create a character design with a consideration of form and symbol in visual design.

·      Construct animated puppet skeletons.

·      Form an understanding of different joint & hinge styles.

·      Experiment with simple Puppet Mechanisms.
