DPS ACADEMY 2020 - call for submissions

After three years of providing Brisbane theatre makers with an intensive puppetry and visual theatre training program, we’re mixing things up for the DPS Academy. In 2020 Dead Puppet Society and Brisbane Powerhouse are offering Brisbane artists the opportunity to propose an idea for creative development under the guidance of Dead Puppet Society artists.

Over the course of 10 weeks, up to three successful projects will receive training in visual theatre making, mentorship and direction from senior artists of the company, a modest fee to put towards the cost of materials and/or production costs, and facilitated rehearsal time. This will culminate in a weekend of creative development showings at Brisbane Powerhouse, as part of a new series called THE DPS LAB.

Dead Puppet Society and Brisbane Powerhouse are offering:

  • A cash contribution of $1,000 per group to assist with paying for materials and casual labour, plus 100% of box office takings to be split equally between groups.
  • Senior artists for facilitation and specific producing support.
  • In-kind support through the use of shared rehearsal space once a week for 10 weeks and 1-week full time.
  • A twenty-minute slot to showcase creative development outcomes as a part of THE DPS LAB, including specific in-kind technical and front of house support.
  • In-kind ticketing and marketing support for THE DPS LAB includes feature on the DPS and Brisbane Powerhouse website, a dedicated media release, inclusion in the Brisbane Powerhouse program guide and Powermail and DPS EDM. It is expected that additional marketing will be undertaken by the artist.

As an independent company, Dead Puppet Society built its foundations on the pathways and opportunities made open to emerging theatre practitioners by the Brisbane theatre industry. We believe in supporting the growth of this ecology by providing a bridging opportunity between university graduates and other development programs. We are delighted to continue to partner with Brisbane Powerhouse, Brisbane’s home for contemporary culture, who share our commitment to supporting emerging theatre practitioners. By providing a hands-on mentorship and a structured creative development process we will contribute to the next generation of theatre artists and to the practice of collaborative, visual work in a supported and safe environment.

Expressions of interest close: 22 June via email.
